KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 21 - Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) managed to take home five gold medals, 12 silver, 10 bronze and a special award at the Malaysia Technology Expo (MTE) 2014, held from 20 to 22 February.
Dr. Farzad Hejazi from Faculty of Engineering successfully bagged a Gold medal and a Special Award - The Very Best Award through his research to earn him a cash prize of RM4,000.His innovation, The Wall Rubber Damper for Framed Structure is vibration absorbing rubber or wall damper to reduce dynamic load effect and prevent damage to building structure due to concussion caused by natural disaster.
The second gold was won by Dr. Rohaya Latip from Faculty of Computer Science and Information Technology with her innovation, Multimedia File Splitting Technique for Medical Data Storage Grid. This technique has the ability to manage large medical data such as echocardiogram, MRI and Citi scan to be stored in a computing facility grid called the Biruni Grid.
Another participant from Faculty of Science and Information Technology, Dr. Ali Dehghantanha, managed to take home another gold medal through his innovation, Private Safe Android Market: Be Part of Our Revolution in Security Industry creations, which is an innovative download security app for android users.
The fourth gold was bagged by Prof. Dr. Taufiq Yap Yun Hin through his research, Bi-Functional Heterogeneous Catalyst for Production of Non-Edible based Biodiesel, a system development for heterogeneous catalyst for biodiesel in a more effective large-scale production.
Prof. Dr. Fatimah Md. Yusoff from Institute of Bioscience, won the fifth gold medal for UPM through her product, Premier Marine Collagen, edible collagen that is extracted from jellyfish and its use is suitable in nutraceutical, pharmaceutical, food and cosmetics industries, especially for the fabrication of biomaterials such as bandages and artificial tissues.
UPM also won the Most Visitor - Friendly Booth and received a trophy on the night of the awards ceremony presented by Datuk Dr. Abu Bakar Mohamad Diah, the Deputy Minister of MOSTI.
