UPM START-UP COMPANY DEVELOP JAVA TEA ICE CREAM
SERDANG, May 14 – UPM start-up company under the InnoHub Putra Science Park UPM programme, Proville Tech Sdn Bhd has successfully introduced a java tea-based ice cream product rich in its various properties.
The use of Misai Kucing is familiar especially in treating high blood pressure, diabetes, diabetes and gallstones. Typically, the herb, Misai Kucing or its scientific name Orthosiphon Stamineus is often grown as an ornament tree due to its beauty.
Dr. Nur 'Aliaa Abdul Rahman and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Azhari Samsu Baharuddin from the Department of Process and Food Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), has chosen to produce ice cream from java tea as the latest product.
According to Nur 'Aliaa, the ice cream was produced from the cold brewing process of the Java tea leaves for 20 hours before the resulting tea was processed into ice cream.
"The ice cream is also formulated with low calories given that the products produced from AppetitTM are based on health. The AppetitTM ice cream started entering the market in November 2020 as one of the technological innovations from UPM.
"This innovation preserves the natural taste of the Java tea as well as its properties and we are in the process of producing a label on the product. We're going to start selling these Java Tea flavours in early June," he said.
He said among the AppetitTM Ice Creams that have been commercialised and patented in the market under the Appetit Village branch are Musang King, D24, durian kampung, Cempedak, Nangka Madu and many more.
Meanwhile, Azhari said with UPM as one of the universities with agricultural resources that can produce herbal-based products, AppetitTM Misai Kucing is able to compete with other products in the market.
"The selection of ingredients in ice cream is done carefully to produce health-based ice cream that has a quality of texture and taste comparable to other commercial brands in the market," he said.
Ice cream enthusiasts can get ice cream at AppetitTM Village in Saujana Impian Kajang or visit the Appetit Village HQ (Facebook) and @appetitvillage_hq (Instagram) social pages for more information. Meanwhile, Azhari also said the AppetitTM Village branch will have other branches in Shah Alam, Putrajaya, Melaka, Kuantan, and Kelantan.
