SERDANG, April 26 – The development of the aquaculture industry as a protein source has led to an intensive culture of fish and shrimp. Over the past two decades, intensive larvae farming of various aquatic species has been spent on industries worth millions of dollars.

Typically, breeders use the widely imported Artemia to promote the growth of fish and shrimp larvae in the production of seed stocks. However, the increasing demand for Artemia around the world makes its supply and availability limited alongside its growing price every year.

To overcome this issue, a group of researchers from Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) led by Dr Muhammad Fadhil Syukri from Faculty of Agriculture develop FS Feed technology, first alternative microdiet food for fish and shrimp larvae in Malaysia.

To overcome the problem, the research team of Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), led by Dr. Muhammad Fadhil Syukri from the Faculty of Agriculture has developed FS Feed technology which is the first microdiet food substitute for live fish and shrimp in Malaysia.

FS Feed is a nutritious micro-diet that is produced from 100% organic ingredients to replace live foods such as rotifer, artemia and others for larvae, seeds or fry and shrimps.

According to Dr. Fadhil, FS Feed is a simple food and suitable for intestinal digestion. In addition, the effectiveness of FS Feed feed is also better when compared to live foods such as Artemia in terms of larvae survival rate.

The production of FS Feed products is to use fish oil and protein as the main ingredients to support the growth and survival of fish and shrimp larvae as well as being a good binder in food to improve water stability and avoid nutritional contamination.

Among the advantages of FS Feed, it can be given directly without the need for preculture or treatment as its size in micro-form is ideal for different sizes of fish and shrimp mouths. As an early stage, it facilitates the nutritional content in these micro-foods to be digested and absorbed by the larvae of fish and shrimps.

FS Feed has received numerous awards including the gold medal at the International Conference and Exposition on Inventions by Institutions of Higher Learning PECIPTA (PECIPTA 2019) and was nominated in the list of the top five innovations in the Business Pitch Plan organized by PECIPTA 2019 as well as the coverage of a press conference organized by Bernama TV and Utusan Malaysia newspaper.

FS Feed is an innovation that is fully developed through the Innohub development research fund, and is produced by a startup under InnoHub, Putra Science Park UPM and brings out the first innovation laboratory that encourages entrepreneurs to produce profitable UPM technologies and innovations in the market.

According to Assoc. Prof. Dr. Wan Nurhayati Wan Ab. Rahman, Deputy Director, Innovation Promotion and Commercialisation Division, Putra Science Park, UPM welcomes collaboration from industry partners to bring research results to the market so that the benefits can be shared with all parties targeted.
