Ensuring Food Security through App-Guided Urban Beekeeping

Try-Gonna Bee Apps

COPYRIGHT NO. LY2022W03512

The declining bee population is concerning due to their vital role as pollinators for fruit crops. Factors such as habitat loss, pesticides, climate change, diseases, and human fear contribute to this decline.

To address the issue and promote bee populations in Malaysia, Suburban Beekeeping has emerged as a hobby. Efforts are underway to promote beekeeping through organized programs and collaborations with NGOs like MY Bee Savior Association.

To assist novice beekeepers, a mobile app called "Try-Gonna Bee" has been developed. It guides inexperienced beekeepers in selecting suitable hive locations. Using GPS data from the Google Maps API, the app identifies areas with dense vegetation, indicating a high greenery ratio suitable for hive placement. It also utilizes built-in sensors (gyroscope, compass, camera) and a luminance detection algorithm to determine if the site avoids direct sunlight.

The Try-Gonna Bee app includes a honey tracker function to remind beekeepers of tasks. A user study involving bee experts and non-trained users evaluated its accuracy, usability, and user experience. The study revealed that the app accurately determined greenery ratio and luminance level, outperforming novice users in hive installation judgments.

Most respondents expressed satisfaction with the app's usability and experience. The ultimate goal is to generate greater interest in beekeeping, indirectly improving long-term food security. The Try-Gonna Bee app show promise in encouraging beekeeping, particularly among the younger generation, and contribute to preserving bee populations and ensuring food security in Malaysia

Advantages

Try-Gonna Bee app is low-cost, accessible, easy to learn and use, requires minimum maintenance and requires no additional hardware (all the sensors used are from the camera, gyroscope and accelerometer sensors which are already built-in in regular mobile phones)

TRL 7

Potential market is aimed at inexperienced beekeepers who want to try suburban beekeeping, school / college science project, and as an educational science startup kit set.

  • Industry

Can collaborate with companies that sell beekeeping starter kits (beehives, honey pump, etc.), such as HNS Trigona Sdn Bhd. Services on Try-Gonna Bee app can be offered as an added-value support app

  • End User

Novice beekeepers / bee enthusiasts can start their beekeeping activity more confidentally with Try-Gonna Bee app providing the app-based guidance. This will prevent losses and mistake of new beekeeper due to installing beehives at unsuitable location or failing to consistently maintain the beehives. Looking up information on the app is also easier and more convenient than Googling / searching.

The app does not require any IoT/external device to find a suitable place to install the beehives. It also does not require any complicated setting up, as it is designed to be installed and immediately functional.
