Layer-by-layer assembled composite materials for energy storage

Energy storage performance is strongly depending on the properties of an electrode material such as the active surface area of electrode and electrode structure architecture, and the presence of active component into the electrode. Therefore, the successful formation of the high-performance supercapacitor is closely relying on the electrode properties. The present invention relates to a composition for use in an electrode, a method of fabricating the electrode and a supercapacitor having said electrode. The composition for an electrode is an electrically conductive multi-layered nanocomposition assembly comprising a plurality of layers having a plurality of materials in each layer, wherein the materials are selected from a group comprising, but not limited to, a conducting polymer, a carbon-based material, a metal oxide/hydroxide and a layered double oxide/hydroxide. The supercapacitor has excellent specific capacitance, high specific energy, high specific power, and good life cycle.

The present invention relates to a method to fabricate a multi-layered composition as an electrode material for energy storage. The composition is an electrically conductive multi-layered nanocomposition assembly comprising multilayers having a plurality of materials in each layer. The materials are selected from a group comprising, but not limited to, a conducting polymer, a carbon-based material, a metal oxide/hydroxide, a layered double oxide/hydroxide and mixtures thereof. The existing technologies only use carbon-based materials as electrodes and the charges are stored based on electrostatic reaction. The developed multilayers consist of carbon-based materials incorporated with pseudocapacitive materials that exhibit fast redox reaction that enhanced the energy storage performance. The multilayers exhibit better conductivity, excellent specific capacitance, high specific energy, high specific power and extraordinary life cycle.

Advantages

  • Capable of combining two or more different types of materials in each layer of a multi-layer composition assembly
  • Allows the possibility to choose material independently for each layer
  • Gives flexibility in tuning the active surface area of electrode and electrode structure architecture, and the presence of type of active components into the electrode.
  • Avoids the usage of binder in electrode preparation
  • A straightforward approach with simple preparation method
  • Delivers excellent specific capacitance, high specific energy, high specific power, and extraordinary life cycle than current technology
