Determinants of Organizational Practices And Research Culture For The Enhancement Of Research Performance In Malaysian Universities

Abstract

Research performance is crucial to be monitored and maintained by the universities to make sure the output of research will meet the research output. Publication is one of the main research output to be measure to the research performance even though not all of the universities in Malaysia accomplish in publishing journals. Why there is dissimilar on every university researchers in research performance? This study explores the similarities and differences of organizational practices and research culture among academic staff that influence the research performance in Malaysia public university, mainly via a case study of Universiti Putra Malaysia , one of the best Research University particularly in agriculture fields in Malaysia. Qualitative approach was taken where 40 academic staff in science and technology groups and social science, art and humanities groups were interviewed through the focus group discussion. Views and experience from the researchers is crucial to determine their research performance factors. This study shows similarity of 5 possible tangible and 8 intangible factors that contribute to research performance emerging among the academic staff including one intangible factors as a new factors that will have an impact to the research performance. All the factors can be indicator as a benchmarking to others university especially new age of university in Malaysia. Primarily, it extends the literature, by providing further understanding on the issues of organizational practices and research culture on the Malaysian public universities.

Skytider - Overcomes the Difficultness of Installing and Lowering the Outdoor Bunting

ABSTRACT
Bunting is a medium to promote advertisements or programs that are widely used in Universiti Putra Malaysia in conjunction with the programs. There are two types of bunting that are commonly used; indoor and outdoor bunting. Outdoor bunting is a bunting that is installed outside of a building and it is usually installed at the street lamp poles, fence or at dedicated space. In UPM, outdoor buntings usually installed at the street lamp poles, around the campus. Issues faced by staff when installing and uninstalling the
outdoor buntings are; method used, number of staff needed, time consuming and securities issues. All these factors lead UPM to hire external contractor for installing the outdoor buntings. These issues are also faced by other universities/institutions and external contractors. Several initiatives have been identified in order to mitigate this issues including the implementation of ‘Program Bebas Dawai’, an improvement of Standard Operating Procedure for bunting installation and creation of a new innovation called
Skytider. Skytider is an installation tool for outdoor buntings that will expedite method without using ladder, minimize time, improve security measures and save costs by hiring less external contractor. Skytider protected under industrial design, trademark and copyright protection.Skytider is widely used in Serdang Campus, Selangor, Bintulu, Sarawak and Port Dickson, Negeri Sembilan.

Design and Improvise of High Reach Wire Cutter

Abstract: High reach wire cutter is an apparatus design using a new mechanical technique of wire cutter without string-pulling or lever mechanism. Galvanized steel wire usually use to bind the advertisement buntings on certain high on street lighting columns in Malaysia side road. Difficulties to dismantle the bunting or leftover rusted wire that need to use a ladder can cause some risk, and it disrupts the scenery of the environment. On the other hand, the old rusted wire is left on the street lighting columns due to the dumping of illegal advertisements in the residential areas. The challenges of ladder perturbation cause the wire is tied at more than 4.0 meters height prompting the workers to snatch the buntings down, leaving the wire fragments on the posts. This study is to design and improvise tools that can reach the higher, speeding the process, low cost, light, adjustable handle and avoided using a ladder to improve safety. The result is successfully developing a high reach wire cutter with a new mechanism with buffer to fill in the gap and column retainer to make it efficiently cut and remove tight wire on the street lighting columns.
