PSP's Achievement

The PSP and staff have contributed significantly to outstanding achievements on behalf of UPM, especially in the management, innovation, and commercialisation category.

Putra Science Park (PSP) at Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) has achieved numerous remarkable successes, including in intellectual property (IP) management, technology commercialization, and achievements in competitions. Since 1995, PSP has managing UPM`s IP filings at the national and international levels, including patents, copyrights, and trademarks. PSP has also won the prestigious MyIPO Intellectual Property Management Award eight times, reflecting their excellence in IP management. In terms of technology and innovation commercialization, innovations from UPM’s research have been successfully commercialized, generating gross sales exceeding RM75 million. These achievements highlight PSP’s success in bridging academic research with industry and market needs.

PSP’s success in competitions is also noteworthy. UPM has won various awards at the Selangor R&D and Innovation Expo (SRIE) across different categories, including gold awards and best innovation awards. UPM’s technologies were also recognized at the Malaysia Technology Expo (MTE) with achievements in gold, silver medals, and special awards. On the international stage, PSP shone at the International Invention Innovation Competition (iCAN) where several researchers under PSP’s guidance won awards at this international contest. PSP also excelled at the International Technology Expo (ITEX), receiving the best innovation award, demonstrating UPM’s competitive edge on a global scale.

PSP has been instrumental in the development of over 80 technology-based startups. More than 20 of these startups have successfully raised investments exceeding RM20 million, with some companies reporting sales valued in the millions of ringgit. UPM’s status as the recipient of the highest research grants totaling RM97.4 million has provided strong support for new research and innovation. PSP has also been recognized regionally, winning the ASEAN Award as one of the best technology transfer centers among ASEAN countries. On a global scale, PSP received gold medals and special awards at the Geneva Inventions Expo and set records at BioMalaysia, showcasing UPM’s ability to compete internationally in the biotechnology field.

Strategic partnerships with multinational companies, local businesses, and government organizations have accelerated the technology commercialization process. UPM’s technologies, through PSP, have had a significant impact on local industries, particularly in agriculture, healthcare, and green technology, helping to boost productivity and contribute to economic development. PSP also regularly organizes various innovation developer programs such as hackathons, IP workshops, and commercialization training to enhance the innovation capacity of UPM’s researchers. Some UPM technologies have been successfully commercialized globally, including in Japan, the United States, and Europe, marking PSP’s success in transferring local innovation to an international scale.

The strong technology transfer ecosystem at PSP is led by individuals recognized globally in technology and innovation management, including those involved in the Alliance of Technology Transfer Professionals (ATTP). PSP’s successes not only reinforce UPM’s position as a leader in innovation but also demonstrate the institution’s ability to make a significant impact on both local and global society and economy.
