Applications for Intellectual Property (IP) at Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) may be submitted through Putra Science Park (PSP), which is responsible for managing the protection and commercialisation of innovations by UPM researchers. The types of IP protection offered include patents for new innovations that possess novelty and commercial value, copyrights for works such as software and teaching materials, trademarks to safeguard brands or logos, industrial designs for the aesthetic protection of products, as well as trade secrets for technologies that are not patented but require protection through agreements.

Applicants are required to prepare documents such as the UPM IP application form, technical documentation of the innovation, and research verification prior to submission to PSP for review and assessment. If the innovation is deemed eligible, PSP will assist in filing with the Intellectual Property Corporation of Malaysia (MyIPO) or the relevant international IP protection bodies. Once the IP is registered, ongoing monitoring and renewals are necessary. PSP also provides support for commercialisation efforts through technology transfer, licensing, and industry collaborations, ensuring that UPM innovations can be widely utilised
