Hempedu Bumi and Its Potential

Approximately 100,000 Malaysians suffer from cancer each year. Chemotherapeutic-induced cognitive impairment occured in 10% to 40% of all cancer patients and 16% to 75% of cancer survivors, while 30% to 40% may develop peripheral neuropathy after chemotherapy. Treatment of these adverse effects are limited and expensive. Therefore, the current invention provides a cheaper with better efficacy option

There is no established protocol in scientific literature regarding the usage of Andrographis paniculata as a neuroprotective agent against chemotherapeutic-induced cognitive impairment and peripheral neuropathy in subjects with cancer.

Therefore, the present invention provides a method for the production of a standardised aqueous extract of Andrographis paniculata leaves comprising steps of drying the leaves and extracting them with water at a temperature of 60°C. The extract contains andrographolide, neoandrographolide and 14-deoxy-11,12-didehydroandrographolide which has anti-inflammatory and antioxidative effects in in-vivo cancer model.

Andrographis paniculata protects against chemotherapeutic-induced cognitive impairment and peripheral neuropathy which can be taken as a supplement prior to commencing chemotherapy treatment. The estimation cost to produce the standardised extract from Andrographis paniculata is lower than other natural compounds due to ease of cultivation, hence, a cost-effective supplement can be produced to protect against chemotherapy adverse effects.

Advantages

The present invention is cost-effective and a safe supplement compared to existing cognition enhancing treatments in the market. In addition, plant extracts so far have been prepared mostly using organic solvents, but the present invention is made with addition of water only, making it a safe product.
